A Very (disappointing) She & Him Christmas

I have been a huge fan of Zooey Deschanel and her band, “She & Him”, for a while now, and was incredibly disappointed when I heard their new Christmas album. As I was listening to it I realized it vaguely resembled another Christmas album I had once heard, and then I realized that it vaguely resembled just about EVERY Christmas album I have ever heard. You know a band is really going downhill when they make a Christmas album, of course there are a few exceptions, such as the Vince Guaraldi Trio and Mannheim Steamroller, but it’s usually just not a good sign. This album is made up of covers of some “Classic” Christmas songs, which makes it seem as though their intention was to land some commercials and Christmas soundtracks. I also found it very disappointing that it was released about a week after Halloween, the early release date actually validates my point about their obvious attempt to cash in on Christmas consumerism. Go to any mall in America around Thanksgiving and you will see Santa sitting in a chair asking kids what they want for Christmas; people begin preparing for this holiday MONTHS in advance, and apparently so did She & Him. On television we see Christmas related commercials starting as early as Halloween, and my guess is that She & Him were making an attempt to release it as early as possible to elevate the chances of getting their songs on one of them. So don’t be surprised when you hear Zooey Deschanel’s voice on a Macy’s commercial, all in all a very disappointing She & Him album.

Here is the track list if anyone if interested in actually checking it out, though I don’t recommend it.

One Response to “A Very (disappointing) She & Him Christmas”

  1. I’m afraid I disagree with you on this one. “A Very She & Him Christmas” is one of my favorite albums this season. I especially love the simplicity and warmth of their version of “The Christmas Waltz.”
